Row Jimmy - Shades of Ship of Fools thread |
I always found this number a dissapointment, too slow, never could grasp what the lyrics were about, repetitive. Would fast forward through on tape in most cases.
That said the version from the Warfield on 10/3/80 simply sparkles. I still don't know what the song is about, but it is sweetly played, & I couldn't stop singing along.

In the same way that Let it Grow is a tribute to the Farmers Almanac?

I've always liked Row Jimmy. I grant you that it's slow and repetitive, but Jerry's guitar has such beautiful tone--particularly in 73 and 77. The slide guitar break is grate when he's on, but I particularly like the second break, without slide, in 77 versions. There are two nice ones on DP29, and the version from Charlotte on 12-10-73 (Download Series 8) is sublime!

I'm the opposite. I allways considered Row Jimmy to be a first set highlight for me. It just evokes so much emotion. Plus I love the tender subtlies of it. Don't feel bad about not understanding what the hell it is about. There's a Robert Hunter interview where Gans tells him he never could get a handle on it and Hunter is all surprised and asks if his songs are really that obtuse.
My take on it is that it's about intenstinal fortitude, or having the mind to keep your composure and overcome obstacles. Of course I may be totally off base but it doesn't matter.
Here's one I allways seem to come back to. I just love Phils bass line. Proves that there are times that simple repetition and consistantly can serve a song better than having to be constantly exploratory and out there.

Wait, the lyrics are in English? It never occurred to me to try to figure out what they mean.

Gotta disagree with this one. One of my all time favorite songs as far as constancy and spirited playing. Can't recall seeing or hearing a Row Jimmy that I said oh well that sucked and I was seeing shows in some pretty iffy years. Guess what makes this fun though is that what is one persons garbage is another's treasure. Cheers
